A Message From Principal Diaz

August 2015

Strathern Families,

Welcome to the 2015-16 school year at Strathern Elementary School.  I’m excited to begin the new school year!  My goal this school-year is to continue supporting the hard work students, teachers, parents, and administrators have work so hard to accomplish. This school year we will continue to support our students’ learning. All Strathern staff is committed to ensuring our students are prepared to succeed.

This past year teachers worked diligently on teaching the Common Core State Standards, and administered the Smarter Balanced Assessments. We will continue to use our instructional data to drive our instruction.  In addition to highly expected mastery of the Common Core State Standards, we will focus on building our school behavior plan.  Our School Wide Behavior Plan will continue to focus on being safe, respectful, and responsible.  We will boost routine incentives and motivation for students who are incorporating all three foci into their daily school practice. We will also celebrate students’ academic success by holding quarterly Academic Student Success Assemblies.

As a school community, we are committed to excellence and encourage active participation in our students’ work.  Please partner with us and ensure that your child…

  • Attends school daily and arrives on time ready for the day’s learning experience
  • Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
  • Reads daily for enjoyment and to develop literacy skills to the highest level
  • Shares daily experiences with you so you are aware of his/her school life
  • Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject

Important Reminders for 2015 - 2016

  • Students' first day of school is Tuesday August 18, 2015. School campus will open at 7:30am and Instruction will begin at 8:00am. Come meet your child’s teacher. On the first day of school parents are invited to accompany 1st through 5th grade students to their class line.   If you wish to accompany your 1st – 5th grade student to their line, we ask that you enter through the Shadyglade gate. Because we are a closed campus parents will not be allowed to enter the classrooms.

  • Tk and kindergarten students and parents will meet in the auditorium at 8:30 am. 

  • ​All students will continue to receive Breakfast and Lunch at no cost to families however, this year all families are required to submit a Meal (lunch) Application. We must collect all family’s application to continue to qualify for School-wide free lunch and Title I funding. Please help us reach our goal by logging on to the LAUSD homepage and clicking on LAUSD Meals Application or you can come to the main office to pick one up. You are required to fill out one application per family. If you need assistance please remember we have our parent center staff that can assist you.

  • The School-Based Management Waiver is in full effect.  School Day Start times will not change. Dismissal times will be adjusted as follows:

    • Regular Schedule:

      • 2:23 pm dismissal on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

        • 1:23 pm every Tuesday of the 2015-2016 school year

    • Shortened Days:

      • 1:48 pm dismissal

    • Minimum Day

      • 12:43 pm dismissal

Lunch times remain the same however, the grade levels participating in each lunch period is as follows:

  • 11:10am – 11:50pm TK & Kindergarten 1st Lunch

  • 11:20am – 12:00pm TK & Kindergarten 2nd Lunch

  • 11:40am – 12:20pm 1st and 3rd Grade Lunch

  • 11:50am – 12:30pm 2nd and 4th Grade Lunch

  • 12:20pm – 1:00pm 5th Grade Lunch

Dismissal gate locations will be as follows:

  • Preschool and Kindergarten students will continue to use the Arminta St. gates

  • 1st Grade students will use the Saint Claire gate by the lunch pavilion.
  • 2nd Grade students will continue to use the gate in front of the main office
  • 2rd, 4th and 5th Grade Students will use the Shadyglade Ave. gate

Ready, Set, Go! Program will meet in the auditorium:

  • Hours of operation 6:30 am - 7:50 am Monday - Friday
  • Students must be enrolled to participate. Enrollment will begin Tuesday, August 18, 2015 in the auditorium at 6:30 am. See Site Supervisor Ms. Sanchez.
  •  Please note: if students fail to follow program and school expectations, they will be excluded from the program.

LA’s Best students will now have new meeting location as follows:

  • Hours of operation: immediately after school -  6:00pm Monday - Friday. Students must be enrolled to participate. Enrollment begins Tuesday, August 17, 2015. See Coach Lydia.

  •  Please note: if students fail to follow program and school expectations, they will be excluded from the program.

  • Kindergarten students will be picked up by the Kinder Coach

  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade students will meet Coaches under the lunch pavilion

  • 4th and 5th Grade students will meet Coaches under the pavilion in front of room 14

Youth Services (Y.S.) will continue to serve students in 1st – 5th grade. They will meet in the auditorium daily immediately after school.

  • Students do not need to be enrolled to participate however, if students fail to follow program and school expectations, they will be excluded from the program.
