A Message From Principal Diaz
April is the beginning of our final part of the school year. During this last trimester, grades 3-5 students and teachers will prepare students for the upcoming Smarter Balanced Assessment (state testing). Students in our primary grades will be working hard to master their foundational reading and math skills to prepare them for the next school year.
Safety is always our priority. As a reminder, we have listed a few safety items that you can use as discussion starters with children. You will also notice our behavior expectations. We highlight our behavior expectations that all students are expected to follow. Please discuss these items with your child as we strive school wide to always do our Strathern best.
The district assessments have begun! Make sure that your child is reviewing past lessons, help them by asking them what new material they have learned in class. In Kinder through 2 grade practice the letter sounds, sight words and reading every day, as well as the numbers and the fact families. In the upper grades practice reading every day and summarizing what has been read, as well as the multiplication and division facts.
We are always in need of volunteers feel free to join our Safety Valet Program. Parents, please be reminded that it is illegal to double park while dropping off or picking up your child from school. It is also unsafe for students to cross the street while you are double parked. Please continue to use our valet lane on Shadyglade Street and Arminta Street for morning drop-off.
PARENTS PLEASE AVOID PARKING IN OUR STAFF LOT- SCHOOL POLICE WILL ISSUE CITATIONS TO NON-STAFF MEMBERS.
Please report any delinquent activities to school police at (213) 265-6631.
Parents please take time to talk to your children about safe practices to use going to and from school. These may include:
Rainy Day Drop Off and Pick Up
On mornings when it is raining, students are to report to the auditorium and wait for their teacher to pick them up. The main gate (in front of the main office), Arminta and Shadyglade gates will be open for students to walk on campus. We will also have a rainy day drop off in front of the auditorium.
When it rains at dismissal, students in Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade will proceed as usual. 3rd - 5th grade students dismissed from the Shadyglade gate will wait for their ride home under the pavilion on the main yard. Students will be called as they are picked up.
Like always, please make arrangements with your child.
Parents wishing to take your child home early must stop by the main office to ask for your child to be released. Remember anyone picking up your child must be on the Emergency Card and must present an ID. It is highly recommended to not pick up your child during the last 10 minutes of school, as this is the time teachers are wrapping up the school day and giving students assignments.
Safety Walking To and From School
Strathern Appropriate Attire
Now that winter is here we want to remind you that students should arrive to school wearing appropriate attire.
Most of us know that nutrition is important for health and growth. Now scientists are showing that nutrition, particularly breakfast, helps kids learn. Kids who eat breakfast seem to have easier time learning than kids who don't eat breakfast.
Kids who eat breakfast behave better in school than hungry kids.
Kids who eat breakfast are more likely to be in school than non-breakfast eaters.
Behavior Focus: Cafeteria
Student Safety: Parents wishing to take your child home early must stop by the main office to ask for your child to be released. Parents please assist your child in making healthier choices like fruit, crackers, and juices. Please try to stay away from carbonated drinks, Cheetos, and candy.
One way to show your child that school is important is to get involved in school activities. Show your child that you care about getting involved. One way is to join the school councils and / or PTA. Let your voice be heard and take part in Council meetings once a month.
ELAC (English Learner Advisory Council) and SSC (School Site Council) will have Orientations and Elections on the following dates and times. Please come and participate in your child’s education.
Strathern Closed Campus Policy:
Your child's safety is the top priority at our school. Therefore, Strathern Elementary has a strict “Closed Campus Policy”. There will be no visitors/parents allowed on campus before, during or afterschool without signing in the office and receiving an identification badge.
The following policies will continue to be enforced:
Grades 1 – 5 Dismissal
Students will not be allowed to leave campus the last 10 minutes of instruction at the end of the school day. At 2:19 p.m. (or 1:19 p.m. on Tuesdays), 1st grade students will be dismissed from the Saint Clair gate (by the pavilion), 2nd grade from the main gate on Saint Clair, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade from the Shadyglade gate. Older siblings may walk to meet younger siblings and exit younger siblings’ gate.
Teachers will remain with their students while they are being picked up. Students will not be dismissed to play at this time.
