Happy March and happy Spring time to all our Strathern community. This month many activities are occurring that are continuing to help our students achieve. Parent conferences are February 27 – March 3, 2017. At that time, you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress. If you have any concerns now, please make an appointment with your child’s teacher.

Thank you for your participation with the School Experience Survey! I am confident we will surpass last year’s participation of 91%. Our PTA sponsored pizza party winners are as follows:

Instruction News:

The district assessments have begun! Make sure that your child is reviewing past lessons, help them by asking them what new material they have learned in class. In Kinder through 2 grade practice the letter sounds, sight words and reading every day, as well as the numbers and the fact families. In the upper grades practice reading every day and summarizing what has been read, as well as the multiplication and division facts.

2nd Grade students will be taking the OLSAT exam March 1st and March 2nd. Please make sure your 2nd grade child comes to school on time.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Diaz

Principal

Morning Safety

We are always in need of volunteers feel free to join our Safety Valet Program. Parents, please be reminded that it is illegal to double park while dropping off or picking up your child from school. It is also unsafe for students to cross the street while you are double parked. Please continue to use our valet lane on Shadeyglade Street and Arminta Street for morning drop-off.

PARENTS PLEASE AVOID PARKING IN OUR STAFF LOT- SCHOOL POLICE WILL ISSUE CITATIONS TO NON-STAFF MEMBERS.

Please report any delinquent activities to school police at (213) 265-6631.

Rainy Day Drop Off and Pick Up

On mornings when it is raining, students are to report to the auditorium and wait for their teacher to pick them up. The main gate (in front of the main office), Arminta and Shadyglade gates will be open for students to walk on campus. We will also have a rainy day drop off in front of the auditorium.

When it rains at dismissal, students in Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade will proceed as usual. 3rd - 5th grade students dismissed from the Shadyglade gate will wait for their ride home under the pavilion on the main yard. Students will be called as they are picked up.

Like always, please make arrangements with your child.

Student Safety:

Parents wishing to take your child home early must stop by the main office to ask for your child to be released. Remember anyone picking up your child must be on the Emergency Card and must present an ID.  It is highly recommended to not pick up your child during the last 10 minutes of school, as this is the time teachers are wrapping up the school day and giving students assignments.

Safety Walking To and From School

  • Avoid walking alone
  • Never take a ride with or walk with a stranger
  •  If a stranger approaches or attempts to get the child into a vehicle, children should scream and run for help
  • Students should use precautionary measures, even while waiting inside of the school yard, until parents arrive
  •  Parents and students should maintain good communication about pick-up/drop-off times and locations
  • Never walk in an isolated area or alley

Tell students to immediately report anything that makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable to the police and/or a school staff member.

Strathern Appropriate Attire

Now that winter is here we want to remind you that students should arrive to school wearing appropriate attire.

  • Students are highly encouraged to wear school uniform: Khaki, Navy or dark color pants and white, blue or Strathern spirit shirt.

Breakfast

Most of us know that nutrition is important for health and growth. Now scientists are showing that nutrition, particularly breakfast, helps kids learn. Kids who eat breakfast seem to have easier time learning than kids who don't eat breakfast.

Breakfast eaters:

  •   are able to concentrate on learning
  •   make fewer errors
  •   score higher on tests
  •   are more creative
  •   work faster

Kids who eat breakfast behave better in school than hungry kids.

Breakfast eaters:

  •   cause fewer fights
  •   are more cooperative
  •   are less likely to be sent to the principal's office for a discipline problem
  •   get along better with classmates

Kids who eat breakfast are more likely to be in school than non-breakfast eaters.

Behavior Focus: Cafeteria

Be Neat & Clean

  •   Clean up after yourself
  •   Help keep the school clean
  •   Wash your hands often

Student Safety: Parents wishing to take your child home early must stop by the main office to ask for your child to be released. Healthy Snacks

Parents please assist your child in making healthier choices like fruit, crackers, and juices. Please try to stay away from carbonated drinks, Cheetos, and candy.

Parent Involvement

One way to show your child that school is important is to get involved in school activities. Show your child that you care about getting involved. One way is to join the school councils and / or PTA. Let your voice be heard and take part in Council meetings once a month.
