A Message From Principal Diaz
We are well into the Fall season and are now beginning to feel the cooler weather. As we begin to prepare for cooler weather and winter, please make sure to dress students not only in our school uniforms, but also in layers of clothing to adjust to changing temperatures. This is also a good opportunity to remember to have your child stop by our Lost and Found to look for any lost garments. Please remind your child to not forget sweaters, jackets, scarves and lunch boxes on the yard.
In addition to cooler weather, we also head into holiday season and the beginning of many more school activities. Upon us is Veteran’s Day, parent conferences, Thanksgiving, and other school activities. The best way to help students through the changing schedules is to ensure consistency and routine in school and at home.
Please make sure to calendar and schedule days school is out, parent conferences, early dismissals, and the many wonderful activities our students will be engaged in during the next month.
Student Safety: Parents wishing to take your child home early must stop by the main office to ask for your child to be released. Remember anyone picking up your child must be on the Emergency Card and must present an ID. It is highly recommended to not pick up your child during the last 10 minutes of school, as this is the time teachers are wrapping up the school day and giving students assignments.
Parents please assist your child in making healthier choices like fruit, crackers, and juices. Please try to stay away from carbonated drinks, Cheetos, and candy.
Parent Involvement Policy
On November 30, 2016 the LAUSD and Strathern Parent Involvement Policy (PIP) and the School-Parent Compact will be mailed out via U.S. mail. This documents were reviewed and updated on October 5, 2016 during our Title I and School Site Council meetings. Please look for the envelope with these documents in your mail, if you do not receive them make sure to update your address and stop by the main office to pick up a copy.
Tell students to immediately report anything that makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable to the police and/or a school staff member.
One way to show your child that school is important is to get involved in school activities. Show your child that you care about getting involved. One way is to join the school councils and / or PTA. Let your voice be heard and take part in Council meetings once a month.
ELAC (English Learner Advisory Council) and SSC (School Site Council) will have Orientations and Elections on the following dates and times. Please come and participate in your child’s education.
Strathern Appropriate Attire
Now that winter has left us and the days begin to get hotter we want to remind you that students should arrive to school wearing appropriate attire.
Strathern Closed Campus Policy:
Your childs safety is the top priority at our school. Therefore, Strathern Elementary has a strict “Closed Campus Policy”. There will be no visitors/parents allowed on campus before, during or afterschool without signing in the office and receiving an identification badge.
The following policies will continue to be enforced:
Morning Drop Off
Grades 1 – 5 Dismissal
Students will not be allowed to leave campus the last 10 minutes of instruction at the end of the school day. At 2:19 p.m. (or 1:19 p.m. on Tuesdays), 1st grade students will be dismissed from the Saint Clair gate (by the pavilion), 2nd grade from the main gate on Saint Clair, 3rd, 4th & 5th grade from the Shadyglade gate. Older siblings may walk to meet younger siblings and exit younger siblings’ gate.
Teachers will remain with their students while they are being picked up. Students will not be dismissed to play at this time. YS and LA’s Best will meet their students on the lunch covered eating area and take them to their assigned classrooms. Any 2nd – 5th grade students remaining at 2:30 p.m. (or 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays) will be released to the YS program to wait for their parents.
After School Programs
After 2:30 PM, the only gate parents can use to pick up their students from the after school programs is the 1st grade gate.
Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in keeping your child(ren) safe.
Strathern Positive Behavior
